YOUR IMPACT

We are seeking an experienced and proactive attorney to lead our global data privacy and related compliance initiatives. This is a key role within our growing legal team, and you will be primarily responsible for delivering strategic legal guidance on data privacy matters and implementing data privacy programs across Redwood’s global business. As Data Privacy Sr Counsel you will support data privacy compliance in Redwood’s SaaS and On-Premises products. You will also shape data privacy processes that will enhance customer and employee trust. This role will also collaborate with our CISO and product development teams in other high-profile compliance initiatives, including those relating to artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.  Prior experience in creating and implementing data privacy and adjacent compliance programs is a requirement.  Must be IAPP certified with a CIPP/E, with CIPP/US being a plus.

  • Data Privacy & Regulatory Compliance: Advise globally on data privacy laws, and associated risks and regulatory compliance matters for the same.

  • Legal Strategy & Product Support: Provide pragmatic legal advice to business leaders across various functions, especially as the lead legal team liaison on product development and security, to ensure Redwood’s various products (both SaaS and On-Premises) are developed in compliance with privacy laws.  Identify areas ideal for further improvement and protections in compliance with applicable data privacy law and help propose methods to implement the same.

  • Data Privacy in Commercial Transactions: Assist in the negotiation, drafting, and structuring of key commercial agreements relating to data privacy, and as applicable, security and artificial intelligence, including customer and vendor software agreements and data processing agreements (DPAs) and any related playbooks and risk considerations for the foregoing. Ensure that contracts align with both business objectives and legal requirements for data privacy and compliance considerations.

  • Customer Trust: Be an available, customer-facing resource for high-value customers to demonstrate Redwood’s compliance with data privacy initiatives in a clear, transparent, and convincing manner.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with other departments to mitigate data privacy and security risks and be a key driver of Redwood’s global data privacy initiatives, ensuring that legal considerations are integrated into business decisions in the United States, and internationally, particularly in EMEA and India.

  • Artificial Intelligence and Security Compliance: Assist in other compliance initiatives, particularly those related to artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, to help drive Redwood’s growth and provide legal strategy to the business in a manner that fosters customer trust.

  • General Counsel Partnership: Partner with the General Counsel and other senior leadership to contribute to Redwood’s global legal strategy and manage cross-border legal initiatives.

YOUR EXPERIENCE

  • At least 7+ years of legal counsel experience through a combination of in-house representation and at large law firms, ideally with SaaS and data privacy expertise. Experience in a fast-growing technology company or a software environment with a heavy focus on security and privacy-by-design is a plus.

  • Must be IAPP certified with a CIPP/E, with CIPP/US being a plus.

  • Exceptional writing and communication skills, including the ability to advise on external matters and draft legal policies and documents.

  • Solid knowledge of data privacy frameworks, specifically in the United States and Europe.  Familiarity with artificial intelligence regulations (including the EU’s AI Act), cybersecurity laws, and the EU’s DORA are all pluses.

  • Proven experience in creating and implementing formal data privacy initiatives at a fast-moving software company, including instituting the programs and cross-functional liaisons necessary to ensure data privacy at all levels of an organization.

  • Experience in supporting commercial negotiations for data privacy issues, including by being a trusted resource to discuss such issues with high-value customers and to provide institutional guidance and risk assessments to the legal and business teams on reasonable positions Redwood may take under various data privacy laws.

  • Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues across departments, especially Product, Security, Sales, HR, and senior management.  Strong ability to influence business decisions through legal expertise and collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strategic Thinking: High degree of independence and initiative, with the ability to think creatively and make decisions in ambiguous or high-pressure situations.

  • Business Judgment: Excellent business acumen, with the ability to prioritize legal risks and opportunities in a fast-moving, dynamic environment.

  • Communication Skills: Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, critical executive presence, with the ability to advise senior management and influence key stakeholders.

  • Ethical Integrity: A strong commitment to the highest standards of legal and ethical conduct, with a focus on integrity and transparency in all aspects of work.

  • Multicultural Sensitivity: Familiarity with working in diverse, international environments and an ability to navigate cross-cultural dynamics.

This role is fully remote and will be based in the United States with a preference for candidates based on the East Coast to foster team and customer-wide communications in both the United States and EMEA.

Some quarterly travel will be required as part of the role.

We are a customer-obsessed, innovative company, and we are looking for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

If you like growth and working with happy, enthusiastic over-achievers, you'll enjoy your career with us!
