Whether a scientist, developer, or carbon markets expert, we are united by our mission to take climate action now. We are experts in our fields and we act with confidence. Located across 4 countries and 10+ states in the U.S., we offer both remote-friendly work options and dynamic, in-person experiences with offices located in Seattle, WA and Oakland, CA.

Diverse backgrounds bring diverse perspectives

We recognize that teams with diverse backgrounds and different experiences are powerful. Bringing together a variety of perspectives only enhances how we can effectively address the climate crisis. Together, we are creating an environment where everyone is celebrated, and anyone can succeed.

The Role

Carbon Direct is seeking a proactive, adaptable, and detail-oriented attorney to join our growing Legal team. As Corporate Counsel, you will be a bit of a generalist—comfortable taking ownership of varied legal workstreams, learning new systems and processes quickly, and helping to improve and scale legal operations. You will support a wide range of business functions and play a hands-on role in drafting, negotiating, and managing contracts and policies across the organization.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who thrives in an evolving environment, exercises sound judgment, and values precision and functional execution in their legal work. You should be able to work efficiently and autonomously, easily switch gears, maintain professionalism and integrity, and have a proven ability to work well with internal and external stakeholders.

While experience with carbon markets is a plus, it is not required—we are looking for someone eager to learn and grow with us.

Responsibilities

  • Act as legal collaborator to all Carbon Direct teams, including Supply (commercial, product), Science/Advisory (consulting), and People & Culture (human resources).
  • Structure, draft, and navigate a broad range of agreements, including client, vendor, and carbon credit supplier contracts—both nationally and internationally.
  • Take the lead on select legal workstreams, collaborating with colleagues and escalating when appropriate.
  • Assist in designing and improving lean, scalable legal processes and systems, including implementation and use of contract lifecycle tools (e.g., SpotDraft).
  • Contribute to the creation and refinement of contract templates, internal and public-facing policies, and legal documentation.
  • Help shape realisticl legal strategy by identifying risks, partnering to address bottlenecks, and enabling the business.
  • Support compliance efforts across corporate governance, employment, data privacy, and other regulatory matters.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to provide fast and effective legal support.
  • Maintain a high standard of professionalism, discretion, and responsiveness in all interactions.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and bar admission in good standing (New York, Washington, and/or California preferred but not required).
  • Relevant legal experience, with a mix of law firm and in-house experience preferred.
  • Proven ability to manage legal processes with independence and a collaborative mindset.
  • Excellent contract drafting and negotiation skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Experience improving legal operations or implementing new systems/processes is a strong plus.
  • Clear communicator with the ability to translate legal risk into actionable, business-friendly guidance.
  • Experience supporting or working with technology or advisory services companies preferred.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines in a dynamic, collaborative environment.
  • We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences who are excited to grow with us—even if you don’t meet every listed qualification.

Salary

$156,000-$191,000
