Our Corporate Attorney will have a focus on regulatory work and other insurance-related operations. They will also be responsible for handling a variety of complex legal projects including, but not limited to, educating appropriate associates on contract law, providing legal research, evaluation, advice and counsel to the company and board in areas such as corporate governance, compliance, IT, claims, underwriting, sales, marketing, HR, and any other aspect of an insurance company’s operations. This role will not have a focus on litigation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Following is a summary of the essential functions for this job.  Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below.  Specific activities may change from time to time. 

  • Responsible for handling a variety of complex legal projects involving legal research, evaluation, advice and counsel to the corporation in areas such as compliance, IT, claims, underwriting, sales, marketing, HR, state expansion, and any other aspects of an insurance company’s operations. 
  • Investigates and evaluates insurance-related events including policy reformation requests, complaints submitted to regulatory agencies, and data security incidents.  
  • Assists in ensuring that internal business groups receive appropriate legal support.
  • Fosters strong relationships with internal stakeholders as well as external regulatory agencies and insurance trade groups and contributes to the problem resolution process by identifying, evaluating, and addressing risks as they arise.
  • Participates in community and civic affairs.
  • Contributes generally as a member of the legal team and perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited U.S. law school
  • 4+ years of experience in insurance operations, or similar legal experience, advising corporations on matters such as corporate compliance, regulatory work, insurance coverage review and various other legal services.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Member of the State Bar where practicing
  • Associate in General Insurance Designation

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

  • Ability to work under pressure, handle multiple competing priorities and provide practical legal advice
  • Strong writing, analytical, and communication skills
  • Ability to evaluate risk to the corporation and advise internal stakeholders accordingly based on sound business understanding and judgment
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with internal business units, senior management, and external regulators
  • Ability to analyze insurance-related issues and propose innovative, creative, and workable solutions
  • Ability to exercise independent, informed and considered judgment with minimal supervision
