Job Description

The Controls Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining automated control systems for facility, machinery, and processes within the manufacturing setting, utilizing programming and engineering principles to optimize efficiency, quality, and safety by analyzing system behavior, troubleshooting malfunctions, and making necessary adjustments to ensure smooth operation of facility and process equipment. Perform functions related to controls engineering tasks, supporting manufacturing and maintenance teams, and engineering departments necessary to achieve desired results and/or continuous improvement activities. This role has a wide variety of duties, requiring ability to gain full understanding of production processes and exercise judgment to modify controls to effect desired changes. To plan, prioritize, and execute work under general direction and supervision of Engineering Management.

This position is onsite full-time at New London, NC.

KEY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Developing control system architecture, selecting components, and designing control loops to meet required or exceed Process definitions, EHS standards (E Stops, Light Curtains, guard interlocks, etc), and other key project requirements.
  • Writing code for PLCs, HMIs (Human Machine Interfaces), and other control devices to automate processes.
  • Using software to simulate and model control systems to predict performance and identify potential issues before implementation.
  • Installing control systems on-site, wiring hardware, and configuring software parameters.
  • Thoroughly testing systems to ensure functionality and troubleshoot any issues that arise during operation.
  • Analyzing system performance data and implementing improvements to increase efficiency and quality.
  • Providing technical support for existing control systems, including operation, set-up, instructing preventative maintenance of electrical systems, and troubleshooting malfunctions.
  • Collaborating with other engineering disciplines to optimize new systems, and system upgrades to processes and facility while ensuring project timelines and budget are maintained.

Qualifications

 

  • B.S. in Engineering or related field. (electrical or mechanical)
  • 10+ years Instrumentation, Electrical, and Controls Systems experience in a continuous process for industrial and/or manufacturing environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Mechanical aptitude and understanding of manufacturing processes with experienced problem-solving and analytical skills to diagnose system issues.
  • Extensive experience with PLC platforms from various manufacturers including Allen Bradley (Rockwell ControlLogix), Siemens, Schneider, Mitsubishi, and Codesys for process and discrete controls.
  • Strong understanding of control theory, IA, and principles with proficiency in programming languages (including ladder logic, structured text, and function block diagrams).
  • The ability to manage control system servers, logic controllers, Inductive Automation through Ignition platform for SCADA software.
  • Deep knowledge of facility electrical power distribution infrastructure (including, 4160V, 575V, 480V, 240V, 120V, 24V, PDP, MCC, VFD, Control Panels, Busway, etc.) and process equipment electrical, and electronic systems (including sensors, actuators, and instrumentation).
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet I/P, DeviceNet, ControlNet, Modbus TCP / RTU, Profilbus/Profinet, etc.)
  • High mechanical aptitude, detailed oriented, with deep understanding of manufacturing processes.
  • Experienced controls problem-solving, effective analytical skills to diagnose system issues.
  • Excellent computer skills including knowledge of Visual Basic, HTML/XML, moderate to advanced AutoCAD for electrical DWG creations and P&IDs.
  • Ability to read and create electrical prints/schematics, with deep understand of NEMA, NEC, UL / CSA electrical specifications.

Additional Information

Fortune Brands believes in fair and equitable pay. A reasonable estimate of the base salary range for this role is $63,000 - $110,000. Please note that actual salaries may vary within the range, or be above or below the range, based on factors including, but not limited to, education, training, experience, professional achievement, business need, and location. In addition to base salary, employees will participate in either an annual bonus plan based on company and individual performance, or a role-based sales incentive plan.
