About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Controller to join our growing SaaS startup. This is a remote position that will play a critical role in managing our financial operations and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial reporting. This role is critical to maintaining strong controls and thoughtful financial leadership as we grow. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in SaaS financial management and be comfortable working in a fast-paced, virtual environment.
This role offers a growth path to CFO as the company continues to scale. The ideal candidate is someone who not only excels in execution today but is eager to grow into broader financial leadership, including strategic planning, capital strategy, and executive partnership over time.
What You’ll Do
Financial Management
- Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable (AP), accounts receivable (AR), and month-end/year-end close processes.
- Act as a trusted financial partner to leadership by delivering clear, accurate insights that inform decision-making
Financial Reporting & Accuracy
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, reports, and forecasts for leadership and stakeholders.
- Continuously improve reporting to make financial data more actionable and accessible.
Cash Flow Management
- Monitor and manage cash flow to support our continued growth while maintaining our break-even status.
- Support budgeting and forecasting in a high-growth SaaS environment, proactively identifying risks and opportunities.
Payroll and Benefits Administration
- Manage end-to-end payroll processing and benefits administration with accuracy and compliance.
- Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulations, tax requirements, and internal controls.
Process Improvement
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy of financial operations as we scale.
- Challenge existing workflows, test improvements, learn from results, and iterate quickly.
- Take action when something isn’t working—own the problem and fix it.
Compliance and Audit Readiness
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and other relevant financial regulations.
- Coordinate and support internal and external audits
Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of controller or senior accounting experience in a SaaS company
- SaaS Expertise: Strong understanding of SaaS business models, revenue recognition (ASC 606), and key SaaS metrics
- Growth Mindset: Experience managing finances in high-growth environments (100%+ annual growth preferred)
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with accounting systems (NetSuite, QuickBooks, Xero, or similar) and Excel/Google Sheets
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CMA preferred
- Payroll & Benefits: Proven experience managing payroll and employee benefits administration
- Attention to Detail: You deliver results by getting the details right, every time
- Leadership Mentality: Demonstrated desire and ability to grow into broader financial and strategic leadership
- Communication: Clear, honest, and respectful communicator with excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Remote Readiness: Proven ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in a remote environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with startup or high-growth companies navigating the transition from break-even to profitability
- Familiarity with subscription billing platforms (Stripe, Chargebee, Zuora)
- Experience with HRIS and payroll platforms (Gusto, ADP, Rippling)
- Knowledge of equity compensation and cap table management
- Experience preparing for and managing through fundraising events
- Ability to build financial systems that support long-term scale
