  • This position pays between $76,300 – $114,450 based on experience

 

The Coding Manager is responsible for the operational coding functions within the Health Information Management Department for the respective markets and acute care facilities. This includes recruitment, planning, organizing, staffing, oversight, orientation, ongoing training, evaluations, coaching, and development of all coding staff. Is responsible for meeting the coding associate Revenue Cycle Goals as determined by the Company while complying with all regulatory and governmental requirements. Assists with the development of strategic and operational coding related goals for the system.

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Interviews and recruits staff; provides orientation for new employees; prepares staffing schedules, and completes timely mid year and performance reviews.
  • Collaborates with the Coding Education and Quality Coordinator to assure on the job training is carried out for all job duties of staff directly under his/her supervision.  Monitors the progress of new employees, ensuring competency has been met.  Provides timely, clear, constructive feedback.
  • Responsible for coordinating and managing all activities relative to coding and abstracting of records while ensuring compliance with all regulatory rules and the American Hospital Association (AHA) Official Coding Guidelines. Maintains knowledge of industry, federal, state, and system requirements and communicates and incorporates such into the day to day activities.
  • Monitors productivity in order to ensure that work performance meets standards of the job and assists with resolution of day-to-day problems that may have a negative impact on staff.
  • Fosters an environment of professional growth and development by being a "continual learner" and encourages on-going development of others.
  • Rewards and coaches employees, and when necessary, administers disciplinary action for infractions of Mercy Policies.
  • Conducts regular update meetings for staff to ensure that all employees receive appropriate communication regarding departmental, hospital, market, and company changes/events.
  • Establishes and maintains effective, collaborative working relationships with members of the Medical Staff, Executive Team, Revenue Cycle Leadership, other ancillary departments and peers.
  • Provides a harmonious working relationship, promoting empowerment, that also inspires, motivates and models supportive behaviors, that result in higher level of productivity and an atmosphere of teamwork.
  • Assists in the development of Revenue Cycle goals, objectives, and policies/procedures, and participates in various committees on an as needed basis as the subject matter expert for coding related issues.

Required Experience:

  • 5-7 years of coding and leadership experience
  • Extensive knowledge/experience in Pediatric coding specialty and the ability to provide education/support to coding team and providers.   
  • Previous management experience in Coding preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of Diagnosis Related Group, (DRG) and All Pat
  • Extensive knowledge of coding guidelines and payer specific requirements.
  • Working knowledge of electronic medical records, (EMR,) coding software, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Satisfactory completion of Anatomy and Physiology as well as Medical Terminology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex coding requirements with others.
  • Ability to function under continual deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize projects efficiently.

 

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelors Degree or Equivalent Experience

 

Licensure/Certification Required:

 

Candidates must have and keep current at least one of the following professional certifications (CPC, CPMA or CCS Preferred):

  • CPC (Certified Professional Coder)
  • CCS-P (Certified Coding Specialist-Phys Based)
  • CCS (Certified Coding Specialist)
  • CMPA (Certified Professional Medical Auditor)
  • RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator)
  • RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician)
