About the Role
The Athletic is looking for an energetic, organized self-starter to serve as Chief of Staff to its Executive Editor. This role is responsible for maximizing the effectiveness of the Executive Editor, including project management, executive assistant duties, leading select special projects, and ensuring effective execution of key initiatives.
The ideal candidate will be a sharp organizer with the ability to communicate quickly, clearly and concisely. We are also looking for someone who can build strong relationships in a remote newsroom spread across North America and the United Kingdom.
This is a remote position based in the United States.
Responsibilities
- Partner with team leads on newsroom planning, outlining priority newsroom projects and working across editorial, product, and tech teams to manage resourcing.
- Help shape the Executive Editor’s agenda based on the most important work across the Newsroom.
- Facilitate cohesive communication and collaboration across the Newsroom leadership team and with leadership stakeholders, ensuring unified direction and effective decision-making.
- Manage calendars, including coordinating meetings with participants, resolving conflicts, and generally managing the Executive Editor’s daily schedule.
- Prepare drafts of general correspondence, department communications, reports and presentations.
- Arrange travel, manage expense report processing and administer department credit card.
- Coordinate staff and personal communication for the Executive Editor, including initial drafts of notes, developing presentations and responding to requests in a timely manner.
- Help coordinate guests and focus for Inside The Athletic episodes.
- Coordinate closely with Operations and other teams, especially those who plan staff summits and other major initiatives.
Requirements
- Knowledge of The Athletic and enthusiasm for sports journalism.
- Minimum 3+ years experience in an administrative role providing support to senior executives.
- Impeccable overall judgment and discretion, especially as it relates to organizational operations.
- Experience with G Suite products and applications, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive and Google Slides.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent prioritization and time management skills.
- The ability to build trust and collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds, teams, and working styles.
- Excellent communication skills, both in writing and in person.
- Adaptability, and an eagerness to give, receive, and act on feedback.
- Willingness to travel 4+ times a year.
The annual base salary range for this role is $140,000.00 - $160,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location.
For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
