About the role and why it’s unique:

  • As a Backend Engineer on the Data Platform team, you’ll be developing and deploying internal APIs and workflows to enable seamless integration between Underdog’s internal services
  • Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs and microservices to enable efficient data retrieval and processing for internal applications
  • Greenfield and develop new backend systems for scalability, fault tolerance, and performance for a core part of Underdog’s future business
  • Collaborate with engineers, product owners, and data scientists to understand requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions
  • Implement and maintain monitoring, alerting, and logging mechanisms to ensure the health and accuracy of Underdog’s engineering systems
  • Lead technical initiatives and drive results in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Lead code reviews, provide constructive feedback, and evangelize best practices to maintain code quality

Who you are:

  • At least 3 years of experience building microservices heavy backend systems and APIs for internal applications on a cloud environment (e.g. AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Experience building and scaling backend systems and designing enterprise scale APIs for external and internal applications
  • Highly focused on delivering results for internal and external stakeholders in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, or ECS
  • Advanced proficiency with Go, C++, Rust, or other similar programming languages (at least 2)
  • Intermediate proficiency with SQL
  • Experience with DevOps practices such as CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g. Terraform, CDK)

Even better if you have:

  • Strong interest in sports
  • Prior experience in the sports betting industry
  • Prior experience developing production systems in Rust


Our target starting base salary range for this position is between $135,000 and $150,000 plus target equity. The starting base salary will depend on a number of factors including the candidate’s skills and experience, among other things.
