Role Overview

As a Backend Architect on the Pay&Card Team, you will be responsible for architecting and building card-related systems end to end. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to design scalable, secure, and compliant infrastructure that supports card systems and lifecycle management.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, build, and maintain backend systems for card issuing and card lifecycle management

  • Lead the technical design and implementation of card certification processes (Visa, MasterCard, Apple Pay / Google Pay onboarding programs)

  • Define and drive the system architecture, service boundaries, and integration patterns for card platform services

  • Ensure system reliability, scalability, and compliance with payment network standards

  • Collaborate with product, compliance, and engineering teams to translate business requirements into technical specifications

  • Establish engineering best practices, code quality standards, and technical documentation for the team

  • Work hands-on — this is a builder role, not a pure advisory position

Requirements

  • 8+ years of backend engineering experience with strong Java / Spring expertise

  • Direct experience building or maintaining a card system  

  • Experience with card certification processes and/or card onboarding programs

  • Strong system design and architecture skills, with experience in distributed systems and high-throughput payment infrastructure

  • Understanding of card network standards, payment flows, and compliance requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience at a fintech, startup, or crypto company that has issued cards

  • Familiarity with card lifecycle management, tokenization, and payment gateway integrations

  • Experience working in agile, fast-paced environments with short release cycles
