The Hartford’s Enterprise Data Platform Services (EDS) team is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Assistant Vice President (AVP) who will be responsible for building and leading a centralized Reliability Engineering practice for all data products and applications in the EDS portfolio, as well as the implementation of a consolidated Tier 1 production support model for the department. The AVP will be responsible for defining and building the RE Squads and Teams for EDS and will lead these teams optimizing, and maintaining cloud automation capabilities to enable infrastructure provisioning required for data products, ensuring the required level of availability, resiliency, recovery, observability and efficiency of data products, applications and platforms.
This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates who live near one of our locations will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office should maintain their current work arrangement with the expectation of coming into the office as business needs arise.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement strategies to advance the use of best-in-class reliability engineering standards, tools, and design practices. Ensure the delivery of highly available and performant data products by leading the adoption of service levels and KPIs for overall data product health, including availability, performance, monitoring, alerting, quality, currency, and resiliency.

  • Organization Management: Develop strategies to hire and mentor engineering talent in an organization that will provide Reliability Engineering and production support for enterprise data products, applications and platforms.

  • Technical Expertise: Serve as the senior leader of subject matter experts and engineers supporting data products and data platform infrastructure, requiring a deep and broad knowledge of technologies, applications, data, integration, interfaces, and business domains.

  • Toil Reduction, Automation and Standardization: Identify toil across the design, build and operations of EDS data products and platforms. Drive increased standardization, automation and self-healing capabilities to improve capability health, velocity and cost efficiency baselines. Partner with Platform Architecture, Engineering and Data / AI Architecture teams to develop strategies to drive standardization and simplification across the technology stack, ensuring that all technical designs can be operated cost-efficiently without adding operational complexity.

  • Cloud Migration: Assist with data product migration to cloud platforms, PaaS, containers, serverless, event and data driven designs including streaming, and other cloud technologies to enable cloud-enablement and platform agility.

  • Operational Excellence: Ensure operational excellence by leading the triaging and service restoration of all high-impact incidents to minimize mean time to service restoration and business impact. Demonstrate end-to-end ownership. Take proactive measures to prevent high-impact incidents.

  • Infrastructure Collaboration: Partner with enterprise infrastructure and RE teams to design and implement intelligent automation and orchestration systems, enhanced monitoring/alerting capabilities, and rapid service restoration processes.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in infrastructure or data platform design, application development, IT operations, security or similar technical leadership.

  • 5+ years of experience leading Reliability Engineering, Cloud Engineering, Data or Infrastructure Engineering teams along with hands-on engineering cloud or infrastructure engineering experience. Must be a strong and experienced leader of a high-performance engineering team, both building and leading teams through the ambiguity of organizational, technology and operational transformations.

  • Experience implementing an SRE practice to improve platform and application reliability, performance and availability.

  • Experience with data platforms and tools (RDBMS, Data Warehouse, Data Lakes, Business Intelligence/Analytics etc.) is preferred.

  • Proven experience with continuous integration and DevOps methodologies and tools, including GitHub, Jenkins, Nexus, Rally, SonarQube, Jira, Azure DevOps, or AWS Code Pipeline.

  • Proven experience using performance and observability tools such as DynaTrace, Datadog, Splunk, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, AWS X-Ray, and related tools.

  • Proven hybrid cloud experience (private and public) across various service delivery models – IaaS, PaaS, SaaS.

  • Proven experience with Infrastructure as Code (IAC) tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, etc.

  • Experience with support model and contract optimization; a continuous improvement mindset.

  • Highly collaborative, with a passion for delighting customers. Strong communicator at all levels within the enterprise (verbal and written), with influence and negotiation skills, and experience working in diverse teams across business units.

  • Certifications from Cloud providers is an advantage

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related discipline or equivalent work experience.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$224,800 - $337,200
