We are currently seeking a talented professional for the role of Associate Vice President, Actuarial Valuation. This person will be responsible for estimates of short term and long-term reserves required for unpaid claim liability, active life reserves, and other actuarial items that ought to be established, appropriate margins, and premium deficiency reserves for monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statement reporting. This position requires an in-depth understanding of how organization capabilities interrelate across segments and/or enterprise wide.
Key Responsibilities
As the Appointed Actuary, the Associate VP, Actuarial Valuation partners with Finance for internal and statutory reporting. He/she completes asset adequacy testing in support of the Actuarial Opinions and Actuarial Memorandums. The AVP also handles actuarial reserves and risk control aspects of state Department of Insurance examinations, external auditors, and internal auditing of reserves and liabilities. Decisions are typically related to intradepartmental coordination, development and implementation of strategic plans, and business outcomes, and develops and implements strategic plans for the scope of management that are aligned with the Segment or Business strategy. This person will also play a key role in driving departmental transformation, as part of Humana’s larger enterprise transformation initiative. The AVP will lead a team of roughly ten associates, with three direct reports.
This position can be located anywhere within the contiguous lower 48 states.

Key Candidate Qualifications
The successful candidate must be qualified to issue NAIC Health and Life Annual Statement opinions under the American Academy of Actuaries’ “Specific” qualification standards, with extensive experience (typically 10+ years) as an Actuary in the healthcare industry. Experience as an Appointed Actuary is preferred. He/she will also have several years of management experience (typically 8+ years), with proven success in expanding and elevating the capabilities and performance of the team. This leader will hold relevant professional designations, such as FSA, ASA, or MAAA. A Bachelor’s degree is required, but an advanced degree is strongly preferred.
In addition to the above, the following professional qualifications and personal attributes are also sought:
- Experience in more than two functions (e.g., modeling, pricing, rate filing, reporting & analysis, reserving or trending)
- Excellent oral and written communications skills, including the polish, poise, and executive presence that will ensure effective interaction with executive and senior-level audiences
- Current or recent experience in a large, highly matrixed company (i.e., Fortune 250), or a major consulting or accounting firm, with proven ability to influence leaders and key stakeholders in such an environment
- Highly collaborative mindset and excellent relationship-building skills, including the ability to engage many diverse stakeholders and SMEs and win their co-ownership in the outcome
- Experience leading large-scale transformation initiatives focused on people, processes, and technology
- Working knowledge of software packages that support enterprise finance operations
- Must be passionate about contributing to an organization focused on continuously improving consumer experiences
Travel: While this is a remote position, occasional travel to Humana's offices for training or meetings may be required.

Pay Range
The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.
$208,500 - $286,700 per year
This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
