In this role, you will provide legal support across UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthcare and Optum, including support for our in-house technology organization, which develops AI-enabled products and technology solutions focused on healthcare and benefits. You will partner closely with business, technical, and operational leaders to address novel legal issues arising from the development, deployment, and governance of AI and other advanced technologies.
This role is well-suited for candidates who have experience working with AI, software, or other advanced technologies, whether through legal practice, technical education, prior technical experience, or collaboration with technical teams. We value candidates who are comfortable engaging with technical concepts and interested in supporting emerging technologies in a rapidly evolving legal and regulatory environment. While experience with AI and technology-related matters is preferred, prior healthcare experience is not required.

Primary Responsibilities:
- AI Legal Guidance
- Provide legal support to the AI Review Board (AIRB) and Responsible AI program, advising on new AI use cases, products, and solutions
- Offer legal guidance throughout the development, deployment, and lifecycle of AI solutions, products, and capabilities
- Enable and support AI fluency and adoption by responsibly embedding AI into legal workflows where appropriate, providing training and guidance, and staying current on evolving AI capabilities, risks, and use cases
- Partner with technical and business stakeholders to address novel legal questions and help ensure AI initiatives align with applicable legal requirements and enterprise governance standards
- Support AI contracting efforts by collaborating with contracting teams to provide legal guidance, maintain AI-related contract templates and playbooks, and support customer-facing and vendor agreements
- Manage and own AI-related RFP, RFI, and regulatory responses, including maintaining response libraries and overseeing response processes
- Technology, Technical Fluency, and Technology Business Segment Legal
- Advise on technology- and AI-related legal matters across the enterprise
- Provide legal support to Optum's technology organization and other business partners developing and deploying healthcare and benefits technology solutions
- Serve as a subject matter resource on technology and AI-related legal issues and support increased technology fluency across the legal team
- Translate complex technical concepts and AI system capabilities into practical legal risk assessments, governance recommendations, and business guidance
- Advise and partner with business and technical stakeholders on risk management and best practices related to technology products, communications, and operations
- Provide legal support for transactional matters on technology related issues
- Provide legal guidance for texting and calling campaigns and technology-enabled operations
- Support technology initiatives and other team projects as needed

Required Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor degree
- Licensed to practice law in the United States
- 5+ years of legal experience, including time in private practice
- Expertise, judgment, and executive presence to advise leadership on complex legal matters
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong working relationships across functions
- Demonstrated ability to identify issues, provide timely and proactive advice, and drive matters to resolution

- Deeper AI and technology background or legal experience, whether gained through legal practice, hands-on technical experience, technical education, sustained partnership with technical teams, or direct work with AI and machine learning solutions and platforms
