At National Park Trips, we inspire readers to discover more on their next trip to a national park. Whether it’s the small towns and hidden gems on the way, the stories the land holds, or the issues facing the park today, we want our readers to get more out of their visit than just a stamp in their park passport. We do this through content about epic road trips and park itineraries, in-depth planning resources, and inspirational and motivational storytelling in four print magazines and eight websites. 

We’re looking for an associate editor to join our small team of national park enthusiasts. Our next team member will be passionate about the outdoors and writing, they’ll bring a strong balance between creativity, efficiency and attention to detail, and will be enthusiastic about inspiring our readers to visit national parks across a variety of platforms from print to digital and email. 

Within 1 month, you will: 
  • Onboard and Integrate: Work closely with the National Park Trips Editor in Chief to understand our content strategy, workflow and brand voice.
  • Master WordPress: Develop fluency in our content management system for content updates and simple builds.
  • Use SEO Fundamentals: Apply core SEO practices to optimize headlines, intros and metadata for maximum reach.
  • Master Hubspot: Develop fluency in our email management system to produce newsletters and client marketing emails
Within 6 months, you will: 
  • Independently Produce Content: Take ownership of sourcing visuals, formatting and publishing articles within WordPress.
  • Lead on SEO: Share expertise and guide teammates on SEO best practices across new and evergreen content to enhance site traffic and reader engagement.
  • Copyedit and Fact-Check: Ensure high standards of accuracy and clarity through detailed editing and verification across print and digital
  • Contribute Client Custom Content: Interview destination and attraction clients to write custom travel articles to appear in print and digital
  • Pitch and Brainstorm: Collaborate in editorial planning meetings with timely, relevant content ideas.
  • Produce Lead Generation Tools: Master Typeform and Gamma to launch 3 quizzes and curated trip plans, a tool for lead generation 
  • Manage Admin Tasks: Track and report data, manage public download servers, build and manage contests, manage and implement forms
  • Contribute Editorial Content: Write SEO driven travel service stories with opportunities for affiliate inclusion 2-3 times per month 
Within 12 months, you will: 
  • Engage with Trends: Monitor outdoor media and social platforms to spot emerging trends and story opportunities.
  • Collaborate on Syndication Projects: Work with editor in chief to identify and set up content on strategic syndication platforms like Flipboard and Apple News+
  • Bring Your Spin to NPT’s Work: Depending on your availability, interests and talent, expand your contributions to include new content types like graphics, video, etc. 

What YOU bring to Outside:  (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Strong writing and communication skills 
  • Strong understanding of SEO best practices 
  • Working knowledge of Wordpress or similar CMS
  • Working knowledge of Hubspot or similar enterprise email service provider 
  • Previous experience writing inspiring, service-oriented content, preferably about travel or the outdoors
  • Ability to edit writing for content value, structure and style; strong copyediting and fact-checking skills
  • Ability to manage a variety of tasks and projects simultaneously and independently in a deadline driven, fast-paced environment
  • Ability to think and work creatively, but also give extreme attention to detail to process oriented, repetitive tasks
  • Passion for public lands, inspiring people to explore the outdoors and protect the places we play in, interest in national parks preferred

What We Offer:

Entirely remote jobs that could be performed in Colorado: Employees can expect to be paid a salary of between $50,000 to $65,000.  Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, Flexible Time Away,  sick leave, and more.  This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
