Associate Business Development Manager – Project Development

This position will assist business development efforts for complex renewable energy projects across Duke Energy’s regulated jurisdictions with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
The Associate Business Development Manager (ABDM) will support project development activities across a portfolio of mainly energy storage projects, a process which culminates in the internal approval of full funding and turnover to construction partners. Specific tasking likely to include development efforts such as initial siting, obtaining land control by negotiating leases or purchase options, engaging in community and stakeholder outreach, applying for and obtaining permits, supporting filings to gain regulatory approval, securing interconnection rights, and negotiating, structuring, and executing engineering, procurement and construction contracts. In addition, ABDM’s support the issuance of utility RFPs for renewables, project acquisitions, the creation of market assessments, filing of regulatory and policy reviews of target markets, and preparing investment memoranda (business cases) for project funding approval.
Responsibilities
Facilitate the development of energy storage projects from inception to construction to support capital investment plan and the Duke Energy clean energy transition.
Ensure business goals and objectives are accomplished through effective negotiations, communication, and work monitoring.
Prepare project development plans, budgets, and schedules.
Work closely with external engineering companies on project design and execution
Develop project models and collaborate with internal stakeholders to recommend deal terms to close transactions.
Structure, negotiate, and execute land control agreements, interconnect agreements, and Engineering, Procurement & Construction agreements.
Assist project due diligence efforts by utilizing matrix level and contractor support to evaluate site environmental conditions, environmental permitting, land use permitting, and external engagement activities necessary to advance projects.
Support submission of project proposals into competitive project procurement processes.
Support regulatory initiatives including responding to data requests as needed.
Identify, communicate, and strategize resolution of challenges which impact development, design, and procurement activities.
Promote organization change based on identified business need.
Develop positive working relationships using effective oral and written communication skills while representing the company in a positive and professional manner.
Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Engineering, Business or related degree
In addition to required degrees, 3 plus years related work experience
Desired Qualifications
MBA or Masters in Engineering, Business, Finance, Marketing, or related field.
Certified Project Manager (PMP) or project development experience.
Prior experience with renewables or energy storage and a high level of determination, commitment and a passion for the renewable energy industry.
Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
Excellent organization, follow-up skills, and the ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
Excellent ability to work independently.
Professional approach, proven good judgment, creative problem-solving capability.
Ability to understand and negotiate the key commercial and legal aspects of major contracts in the industry (Leases, Land Purchase Options, Generator Interconnect Agreements, Power Purchase Agreements, Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Agreements, Operation and Maintenance Agreements, Asset Management Agreements, etc.).
Experience in working in a matrix-based organization: experience in coordinating diverse external and internal partners on complex, strategic initiatives.
Ability to initiate programs with limited definition, identify a path, change direction when necessary, communicate progress and break through resistance when necessary.
Exceptional communication skills with ability to digest complex information into a clear message, including in public speaking engagements during project permitting and community outreach.
Strong relationship management skills.
Experience in an entrepreneurial environment.
Working Conditions
Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
