Key Responsibilities and duties:• Cabling Installation and decommissioning:
Installing new racks and cabling systems (copper Cat 6 and Multimode fibre optic ) according to specifications and industry standards. Decommissioning of redundant cabling systems and racks.
• Cable Management:
Ensuring proper cable routing, organization, and termination to maintain a tidy and efficient data centre environment.
• Troubleshooting and Repair:
Identifying and resolving issues with cabling infrastructure, including network connectivity problems.
• Testing and Documentation:
Conducting tests to ensure the quality and functionality of cabling systems and maintaining accurate documentation of the cabling infrastructure.
• Equipment Installation and decommissioning:
Assisting with the installation and configuration of network equipment, including servers, switches, and other hardware. Decommissioning equipment when it is no longer in use.
• Environmental Monitoring:
Monitoring the physical environment of the data centre, including temperature/ airflow and power. Work with the Data Centre Engineering department to report issues and find solutions to any issues that arise.
• Collaboration:
Working with other Data Centre Engineers, contractors, and Network Engineers to ensure the smooth operation of the data centre.
• Following Procedures:
Adhering to safety regulations, industry standards, and company-specific procedures.
Learning Skills and Qualifications:• Technical Knowledge:
To succeed in this role, previous experience is not required, however it is desirable if you have already started or completed some relevant engineering or structured data cabling studies. What's most important is that you have a desire to develop a successful career within Data Centre Infrastructure Engineering.
• Troubleshooting Skills:
The ability to assess and evaluate issues to enable you to diagnose and resolve problems related to cabling and network connectivity.
• Physical Dexterity:
Have a passion for hands on engineering work and be comfortable working with hand and power tools, performing physical tasks, and working in confined spaces. As this is a physical role the Apprentice must also be comfortable with manual handling tasks, working at height and long periods of being on their feet.
• Attention to Detail:
Ensure accuracy in cable installation, updating records and testing.
• Communication Skills:
Able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with team members, project teams and data centre staff.
• Safety Awareness:
Willing to prioritise safety in all tasks and work to best practice safety standards. You will be required to attend Health and Safety related training courses on an ongoing basis.
• Training:
Willing to attend industry training courses throughout the apprenticeship and thereafter, such as structured cabling, health and safety, electrical safety, confined spaces etc.
Long term opportunities to expand skillset by working with the Data Centre Engineering team that maintain electrical and mechanical infrastructure.
• Computer Skills:
Must be proficient in using Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook and be able to learn how to use other company software applications.
• General Attributes:
The Apprentice must be punctual and reliable, be able to work effectively on your own and with others, have a flexible can-do attitude, be focused on delivering objectives, be self-motivated and have excellent time management and prioritisation skills.
For Debden (Essex) and Dunstable (Bedfordshire) based roles, the Apprentice must be willing to travel between those sites on a regular basis, therefore they will need their on means of transportation.
