The Role

Step is seeking an Accounting Manager, to play an impactful role on the finance team. This is the first dedicated accounting hire who will report directly to the Step Controller.  You will own the month end close while driving key accounting initiatives, projects and process improvements shaping the future of the accounting function.

This is a high-visibility and high-ownership role. You are self-sufficient, decisive, and ready to operate within a world class finance team in a fast-scaling fintech.

Responsibilities
  • Own the full-cycle close - set and manage the close calendar, prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations, and ensure timely and accurate period-end close on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis
  • Lead the external audit, serving as primary point of contact for auditors and manage PBC lists and inquiries
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements with complete flux and variance analysis
  • Support the team on critical accounting projects, such as Step’s Quickbooks to Netsuite migration or new product launches
  • Implement, and maintain corporate accounting policies, internal controls, and scalable process documentation
  • Drive automation and process improvement initiatives across the accounting function, leveraging the full tech stack to reduce manual work and increase accuracy
  • Review and provide quality oversight on work prepared by junior team members and outsourced accounting partners
  • Partner cross-functionally with other departments on a variety of projects or requests
What You Bring
  • 5–7 years of accounting experience, with a mix of public and private preferred
  • CPA designation (or CPA candidate) with proven understanding of U.S. GAAP
  • You've owned a full-cycle close independently
  • Tech proficiency across NetSuite (required) and ideally QBO, Ramp, and Airbase
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • You’re an incredible teammate with a positive attitude and mindset
  • You've reviewed & overseen the work of others, whether junior staff, offshore teams, or outsourced partners
  • You’re highly organized, proactive and comfortable operating autonomously in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets skills, with the ability to manipulate and digest mass amounts of data
  • Strong communicator with interpersonal skills to engage effectively with internal stakeholders and external partners
Bonus Points:
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in the banking and payments industry
  • SQL and Looker experience
