Diversity, inclusion and belonging is embedded in GitLab's culture, policies and practices, especially around hiring. GitLab is building an inclusive end-to-end experience for their team members through their all-remote lifestyle. They take a proactive approach in pursuing and hiring candidates from different countries, ethnicities, genders and backgrounds. Sales Manager Helen Mason sees DEI from both a business and human perspective. “Having a diverse workforce is a business advantage,” Mason said. “More importantly, it is the right thing to do. Removing the invisible barriers in hiring practices can have a ripple effect in society.”

Building an inclusive workplace starts at the top
An inclusive environment helps GitLab retain talent often marginalized in tech. “Learning about Black team members' experiences is the first step toward making them feel included,” Satcher, a member of the Black@GitLab Team Member Resource Group, said. Black employees are invited to monthly meetings with the CEO to offer ideas about what works and what needs improvement in the workplace. Satcher has found leadership’s adaptability personally beneficial. With the company’s support, she has spoken at the Black is Tech conference and mentored three women who have recently received promotions.

Mesika takes a balanced, holistic approach to DEI that benefits GitLab and the team. He knows diverse teams perform better and smarter. “I’m keen to help drive that diversity through my actions and contributions,” Mesika said. One such contribution is the Global Voices TMRG, which Mesika launched and leads. Global Voices brings awareness to GitLab’s globally diverse team and actively improves the daily work life of team members. “I’m very proud of the amazing contributions that emerged from Global Voices to better the practice and work environment of global team members,” Mesika said.
